Merovingian Crypts in Jouarre
Description
The Merovingian crypts in Jouarre are some of the oldest in Europe, with the well-preserved tombs providing a shining example of the period’s decorative arts. The two rows of three Gallo-Roman columns, all topped with magnificent white marble capitals, are also an integral part of the site.
Jouarre Abbey was once a double monastery, where communities of monks and nuns lived in separate buildings. It was constructed during the second half of the 7th century at the request of Bishop Agilbert, during the reign of King Chlothar III. The crypt contains the tombs of the Abbey’s founding family, who established it in around 635. A wooden funerary hall once stood beyond the crypt.
This was a prosperous time for the recently established village of Jouarre, which saw a considerable number of pilgrims pass through. Both the religious communities and many pilgrims used to visit the founding family’s tombs for private prayer and reflection. With the crypt not large enough to accommodate so many people, a number of them were also laid to rest under the old funerary hall.
The first kings and queens of France are buried in the crypt of the basilica-cathedral of Saint-Denis.
