Description
Visit this autumn or winter to witness a truly unique union between the Jacquemart-André Museum and the Borghese Gallery. After a year of renovation work, the Parisian institution invites you to visit an exhibition displaying more than 40 masterpieces of 16th- and 17th-century Italian art. The paintings will occupy the freshly-renovated private mansion for several months.
An exceptional reopening
Caravaggio, Raphael and their peers have left the Villa Borghese for Boulevard Haussmann, where they’ll be on display until January 2025. The paintings, some of which have rarely left Italy, are being exhibited at the Jacquemart-André Museum to celebrate its reopening. So make the most of this unique opportunity to visit the museum and admire these remarkable works. Among them, the famous Boy with a Basket of Fruit illustrates the genius of Caravaggio and his command of portrait and still-life painting. Alongside, Raphael’s Young Woman with Unicorn bears a striking resemblance to the legendary Mona Lisa. The blonde figure in three-quarter length format holds a unicorn in her arms and looks at the spectator with an enigmatic and eerily similar expression. The Italian masters also leave room in the exhibition for the likes of Rubens and other Nordic painters who spent time in Italy during that same period.
Benefactors and collectors
The Jacquemart-André Museum and the Villa Borghese share a mutual history of art collection. In their private mansion, Nélie Jacquemart and Edouard André, both art enthusiasts from the Parisian upper classes, have put together a fascinating collection of 17th-century artworks. These acquisitions, mostly of Italian art, have made the Jacquemart-André Museum a reference in this field.
The Borghese institution, which houses the gallery, was built in the 17th century by a cardinal named Scipione Borghese. Thanks to his passionate love of art, he was able to identify some masterpieces among the artistic creations of his time. In fact, he is deemed to be one of the first and greatest art collectors and benefactors in the history of art. Nowadays, Scipione Borghese’s art legacy continues to grow richer and is on display for the whole world to see.
From classic paintings to avant-garde frescos, art in all its facets is unveiled at the exhibitions of the Paris Region.
