Le Monastic
Description
Never thought you’d drink alcohol in a chapel? Well, a visit to Le Monastic could change all that. It’s all happening at the Domaine de la Reine Margot, just south of Paris, not far from Issy-les-Moulineaux. In this former residence of Margaret of Valois, the walls are steeped in history. In the 17th century, Margaret of Valois took refuge here after her husband died. Since her death, the estate has been passed from owner to owner. In 1676, it was owned by the Compagnie des Prêtres de Saint-Sulpice. A long time after moving in, the priests, inspired by the Sainte-Chapelle de Paris, decided to build a neo-Gothic chapel here.
Nowadays, the estate is occupied by a lovely hotel with a view of the Eiffel tower.
The speakeasy chapel
This place has history oozing from its walls, to the extent that you’d almost expect Stéphane Bern, a key figure on French television, to turn up for drinks. He probably won’t, but that won’t stop you from gazing around in awe. Just picture yourself, sitting in one of the chapel seats, sipping at a glass of rum. Almost unimaginable, isn’t it?
But there’s nothing sacred here, just a speakeasy bar with an unusual atmosphere to say the least. Once you step through the wooden door of this listed Historical Monument, you immediately feel the need to whisper. The magic of yesteryear operates. This truly timeless place plunges you into days of old. It makes a unique backdrop to your tasting of the world’s best rums, to say the least.
La Route du Rhum
There isn’t a transatlantic yacht race in sight here, just a bar that specialises in rum. Le Monastic may have to help you choose from its 400 rums or more, from 35 different countries. The mixologists will offer guidance based on your preferences, to serve you a cocktail or a glass of rum that won’t fail to please.
To really soak up the magic of this venue, the bar invites you to sample 4 different rums. A delicious journey to explore the wealth and diversity of the world’s rums. And for an even more enjoyable experience, sign up for a masterclass with the sommelier. The programme includes: an immersion via the senses, an introduction to the art of tasting and a voyage to discover rums from across the world. You’ll find out all there is to know about rum as well as chapels.
