- Van Gogh, the final journeys
Description
Precisely 170 years after his birth, his genius is still shattering. When you look at the works of Vincent van Gogh, you can see that this international artist did not see the world through the same eyes as ordinary mortals. As talented as he was tortured, he devoted the last moments of his life to painting, without really knowing it. The exhibition ‘Van Gogh, the last journeys ’ looks back over the four years that the artist spent in France, with a particular focus on his stay at Auvers-sur-Oise.
A shocking discovery
On 20 May 1890, van Gogh set down his suitcases and easel in Auvers-sur-Oise. He died there on 29 July of the same year, leaving behind a trail of questions.
In 2020, a fabulous revelation shook the art world. Van Gogh specialist Wouter van der Veen used a postcard to discover the precise location that inspired the artist to paint his last work ‘Roots ’. This discovery provides answers to the motives for his death and sheds light on the artist's final hours.
A retrospective exhibition
Three years after this turn of events, Wouter van der Veen is curating the exhibition ‘Van Gogh, the last journeys ’. In partnership with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the musée d'Orsay, this event will be on show at the château d'Auvers-sur-Oise until 2 November 2025.
This exhibition is made up of 12 spaces. It retraces the Dutch artist's stay in France between 1886 and 1890, in particular his visit to Auvers-sur-Oise. In this small village in the Paris region, van Gogh created more than 75 paintings. A veritable artistic marathon. Some of his last paintings, such as ‘Portrait of Dr. Gachet’, are now among the artist's best-known.
The reproductions of van Gogh's works - which bear a near-perfect resemblance to the originals - are accompanied by a fascinating documentation. At the same time, the exhibition presents original works by other artists of the same period: Léonide Bourges, Victor Vignon, Georges William Thornley, Jules Dupré and Jean-François Raffaelli. Never before brought together in such a context, they offer a unique opportunity for comparison** with the art of the Dutch master. The same reality and as many interpretations as there are artists. The results are fascinating.
The world of art and culture awaits you with open arms. Enrich your spirit in the many exhibitions in the Paris Region.
