The Châtelet Theatre
Description
Not far from the BHV Marais department store in the 1st arrondissement, Parisians still feast their eyes on this 161-year-old jewel among culture venues. Two years after being restored to its former glory, the Châtelet Theatre reaffirms, and rightly so, its strong and unique artistic identity.
The fruit of Haussmannian modernism
The Châtelet Theatre was built between 1860 and 1862, on the site of the old Grand Châtelet fortress. By order of Baron Haussmann, the master builder was Gabriel Davioud. The architect had already created the Saint-Michel Fountain, the Monceau Park gates and various urban furniture pieces such as the press kiosks and public benches of Paris.
During the opening ceremony on 19 April 1862, in the presence of Empress Eugénie, spectators discovered an Italian-style hall of particularly impressive dimensions, featuring a dress circle and a three-tiered balcony.
The theatre’s perfect acoustics, exceptional visibility and cutting-edge machinery made it an instant success.
An institution of artistic creation and innovation
The eclectic programme of this hotspot of Parisian culture features a diversity of musicals, operas, oratorios, classical and modern dance performances, classical music and jazz concerts, musical theatre, etc.
Fauré, Massenet, Bizet, Saint-Saëns, Mahler, Barbara, David Cronenberg, Damon Albarn, Benjamin Millepied, Thomas Bangalter are among the artists who have written and continue to write the theatre’s creative story.
These innovative shows of high standards are now hosted in the main hall with 2,048 seats and by the Grand Foyer pop-up theatre.
