Description
The Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac invites you on a dazzling voyage to the heart of textile traditions, in an exhibition entitled Au Fil de l’Or. This retrospective takes a look at the close relationship between gold, the precious metal that has fascinated us for thousands of years, and the art of clothing among different civilisations.
From the Maghreb to Japan
From North Africa to Asia, the exhibition highlights some unique items made with gold. Symbolising wealth and power, gold combines with fabric to create pieces of great finesse. No longer reserved for the elite, be it a symbol of wealth, elegance or spirituality, gold has enhanced garments and accessories since Antiquity.
An immersive tour reveals embroidered textiles and costumes enhanced with goldwork, that bear witness to the ancestral expertise and cultural traditions of those who made them. Sophisticated kimonos, traditional saris, celebration robes and other creations reflect the ingenious craftsmanship and the importance of gold in portraying power, spirituality and social prestige.
Flamboyant dresses
The exhibition is enriched by the presence of creations by Guo Pei, an iconic figure of Chinese haute couture. This contemporary fashion designer has reinvented the art of using gold in dresses that continue to reflect traditions and ancient crafts.
The 5 original pieces and 9 iconic costumes created by Guo Pei seem to connect with the other historical treasures on display. Truly a highlight of this already fascinating tour.
