- Fashion on the move
Description
Sporting moves like dodging, sprinting, smashing, rolling and punching have something in common: they are all executed with an almost choreographed technique. But the beauty and ease of the athletes’ gestures are enhanced by their choice of garments and accessories.
In this year of the Paris Olympic & Paralympic Games, the Palais Galliera is celebrating the body and sport through the prism of fashion. Between catwalk style and bourrée dance steps, this exhibition will run in three phases, until 7 September 2025.
Sports at the fashion museum
Opposite the Palais de Tokyo, the Palais Galliera invites you to stride into culture. For the Cultural Olympiad, the museum retraces fashion history from an alternative angle, from the 18th century to the present day. Organised along a timeline, La Mode en Mouvement is a fascinating exhibition of more than 200 items relating to the athlete’s body and the role played by clothing in the evolution of sporting practices.
For the occasion, the Palais Galliera has benefited from the exceptional loan of items from the National Sport Museum in Nice and from leading fashion designers. So you’ll have the pleasure of admiring haute-couture garments by Chanel, Sonia Rykiel, Yamamoto and Hermès parading among the sportswear.
Sportswear, from the changing room to the closet
Societal changes have naturally had a major impact on our perception of the body in motion. From sportswear to day-to-day clothing, their design has adapted over time.
Following the standards of classic beauty and social evolutions, fashion has contributed to the body’s emancipation through physical activity. It has given women easier access to sport and greater comfort, previously found only in the menswear department.
The exhibition also shows how fashion has made day-to-day sportswear more popular. Trainers, basketball vests, jackets for joggers or motorcyclists… In a few decades, the whole sportswear range has become as much a part of our wardrobe as stilettos and darted trousers.
In the interests of preventive conservation, the exhibition will be organised in a succession of 3 displays. Between each phase, the exhibition will close for 5 weeks. This gives you the opportunity to see three different displays, as the museum plans to renew the exhibits each time.
