Description

From 9 April to 31 August 2025, the Musée Marmottan Monet is hosting an exceptional exhibition entitled *Eugène Boudin, the father of Impressionism: a private collection*’
.
Curated by art historian Laurent Manœuvre, the exhibition highlights the work of Eugène Boudin, a pioneer of Impressionism and mentor to Claude Monet.

A unique collection

The exhibition brings together 80 works from the prestigious collection of Yann Guyonvarc'h, as well as 10 paintings held at the Musée Marmottan Monet and several loans from the Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Agen and the Musée d'art moderne André Malraux in Le Havre.

This eight-section exhibition traces the career of Boudin (1824-1898)**, from his early landscapes of Normandy to his final seascapes of the South of France and Venice, and follows him to Brittany, Bordeaux, the North of France, Belgium and the Netherlands, through sketches and ambitious paintings intended for the Salon.

An artistic dialogue

The works in the Guyonvarc'h collection are matched with the holdings of the Musée Marmottan Monet, highlighting the dialogue between Boudin and his main pupil and friend, Claude Monet.

Thanks to the participation of the Durand-Ruel archives, the relationship between the two artists and their main dealer is also explored.

A precursor of Impressionism

Known for his seascapes and beach scenes, his pure or moving skies in which we still like to lose our gaze, Eugène Boudin was one of the first French artists to paint en plein air, capturing the elements and atmospheric effects with remarkable precision.

His innovative approach to nature paved the way for the Impressionists, and Claude Monet himself acknowledged his influence when he said: *I owe everything to Boudin.
This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to rediscover Boudin's work and its impact on Impressionism, in a setting that highlights the richness and diversity of his artistic output.

Paris Region's exhibitions are bound to win you over.
