Castle-museum of Nemours
Description
Located on the left bank of the river Loing, at the heart of the medieval city of Nemours, the castle is indissociable from the history of the town, fiefdom and duchy of Nemours.
The keep, flanked by four corner turrets, is linked to a 30-metre-high square tower by a narrow gallery. The Gothic-style inner chapel of the old lords of Nemours is considered an architectural gem. Though the castle was built in the mid-12th century by Gauthier I of Villebéon, Grand Chamberlain of kings Louis VII and Philippe Auguste, it has been substantially restored and altered over the centuries, from one owner to the next. In 1673, Louis XIV gifted the duchy of Nemours to his brother Philip of Orléans, and a major restructuring of the building was undertaken, giving the castle the appearance it has retained until today.
A castle turned museum
After the Revolution, the castle was owned by the town, which decided to open a museum there in 1901. Its collection, which includes the works of sculptor Justin-Chrysostome Sanson and painter Ernest Marché, now comprises more than 20,000 works of graphic art (etchings, drawings, photographs), paintings and sculptures emblematic of late 19th-century and early-20th-century art.
Exhibitions, talks, workshops, night tours, and musical and theatrical events are also on offer.
