Description

Its name comes from two Chinese figurines, the magots, installed in the 19th century on the pillars of the beautiful interior room. Since that time, the café Les Deux Magots has been an integral part of the capital's artistic and literary life.

The heart of Paris beats in Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Verlaine, Rimbaud, Picasso, Prévert and Hemingway have all made this café a symbol of Parisian cultural life and the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district. In 1933, some Surrealists even created a literary prize bearing its name: With the prix des Deux Magots, the venue consolidated its reputation as a meeting place for writers, celebrities and artists. Numerous literary events are held here throughout the year.

The traditions of a great café

This institution of Germanopratine life defends traditional French service. Whether you're sitting on the terrace, enjoying the lively neighbourhood, or more secluded in the beautiful Art Deco room, the waiters dressed in black and white bring your order to you on a tray. Here you'll find the very special atmosphere of a Parisian café. Any advice? Don't miss the famous hot chocolate, prepared the old-fashioned way.

As for traditions, they are also reflected on the menu, which features the great classics of a Parisian brasserie. From croque-monsieur to blanquette de veau, from Burgundy snails to duck foie gras, everyone enjoys savouring the must-tries of French cuisine.

Culture and shopping

A stone's throw from Les Deux Magots, cross the square to discover one of the wonders of the district: the church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Its origins date back to 543, making it the oldest of the great Parisian churches, and one of the most lavishly decorated. Its exceptional frescoes have just been completely restored.

In just a few minutes, you'll be at Bon Marché Rive gauche, the iconic department store that's always ahead of the trends. And from Sèvres Babylone to Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the streets are full of beautiful Parisian shops, only to be found on the Left Bank: art galleries, fashion, bookshops, interior design, designers…
