Description

The story of the Château de Brie-Comte-Robert begins in the late 12th century, when the first stones of the town’s foundations were laid by Robert de Dreux, brother of King Louis VII. At the time, the castle was a square structure with seven towers, surrounded by moats. Besieged during the Hundred Years’ War, and partially destroyed in the 17th century, it was practically abandoned before becoming a listed historical monument. Restoration work was then undertaken by volunteers from the association "Les Amis du Vieux Château de Brie-Comte-Robert” to save the monument. This restoration work is still going on today, along with various archaeological excavations.

Remarkable medieval heritage

The tour explains how a castle works. Eight towers flank the curtain walls. Two of them, the Tour de Brie and the Tour Saint Jean (the main tower), are square, rising above entrances that were defended by portcullises, murder pits and double doors, a defensive system adopted from the end of the 12th century. Inside, volunteers will guide you around the Heritage Interpretation Centre, which is home to an archaeological exhibition that retraces the history of the castle over more than eight centuries through an array of historical artefacts and documents.
