The Dôme des Invalides: an architectural and historical jewel
The Dôme des Invalides, a masterpiece of classical architecture, was inaugurated in 1706 under the reign of Louis XIV. Designed by architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart, this emblematic building, with its dazzling gilding and majestic dome, is a symbol of French grandeur and a witness to several centuries of history. Church of the royal masses for the ** Sun King**, who ordered the construction of the Hôtel des Invalides to house the former soldiers of his army, it has been home since 1861 to the tomb of Napoleon I who died in exile in 1821 and whose body was repatriated at the instigation of King Louis-Philippe. It was the same Napoleon I who transformed the building into a temple to the god Mars and a pantheon of military glories.
Today, visitors come to admire the imposing red quartzite tomb, almost 4 metres long and more than 2 metres wide, which rests in the 23-metre open-air crypt, dug 6 metres deep.
