Description

Founded by actor and director Jean Mercure, the Théâtre de la Ville opened in December 1968 and is home to art in all its many and varied forms, hosting around a hundred shows each year. Although theatre naturally plays a starring role, music, dance, mime, comedy and circus combine in a stellar supporting cast.

With a second hall – the Théâtre des Abbesses in Montmartre – added in 1996, the Théâtre de la Ville can boast of having welcomed many international artists in its time: noteworthy names having trod the boards include director Peter Brook and Patrice Chéreau, choreographers Pina Bausch, Merce Cunningham and Maurice Béjart, musicians Michel Portal and Andreas Scholl, singers Salif Keita, Cesaria Evora and Juliette Gréco, and famous humorists like the inimitable Raymond Devos.
