Description

In 1882, Alfred Sisley moved to Moret-sur-Loing, drawn to the lovely setting of this little town on the banks of the Loing river. Here, over the last twenty years of his life, Sisley often painted the village, as well as the river and the canal that runs alongside it. This period resulted in many of the painter’s celebrated works, like The Bridge at Moret (1893), The Lane of Poplars at Moret sur Loing (1890) and The Loing Canal (1892), today exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay.

Behind the masterpieces

With the help of panels and signs, the Sisley Itinerary allows visitors to discover the precise spots depicted by the artist, which can be admired as they were when Sisley immortalised them and compared to today’s landscape. The journey starts at the Notre-Dame Church, which the artist painted many times. Then, visitors are free to wander at will through the heart of the town, stopping to see the bridge over the Loing, the keep, and the towpaths, which you can admire in some reproductions of his works. The itinerary includes the former residence of the artist, the Villa Sisley, and it is also possible to visit his grave. Don’t hesitate to lose yourself along the little roads or by the river bank – before heading back into the town to enjoy a delicious meal at one of its excellent restaurants.
