Description
To celebrate one of the most important artistic movements since the 1960s, the Fondation Louis Vuitton is staging an exceptional exhibition centred on Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004), considered to be one of the founding members of Pop Art.
Some 150 paintings, installations and other works are on display alongside 70 works by 35 artists of different generations and nationalities who were inspired by Wesselmann's work and who share a ‘Pop’ sensibility, ranging from its Dadaist roots to its contemporary extensions, from the 1920s to the present day.
Alongside Tom Wesselmann, we find the leading figures of the movement, including the unforgettable Andy Warhol with his famous Shot Sage Blue Marilyn (1964), immortalising Marilyn Monroe, as well as Jeff Koons, Marcel Duchamp, Derrick Adams, Jasper Johns, Yayoi Kusama, Roy Lichtenstein, Lauren Halsey, Marjorie Strider, Marisol, Kurt Schwitters… All the richness of pop art is represented.
The advent of popular culture
Few artistic movements have made as many waves as Pop Art.
Born in the twilight years of the 1950s, it touched on every field, from advertising and painting to cinema, comics, fashion, the press and even household robots, imposing its own codes and references.
The exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton shows the extent to which this rich, quirky movement is still very much alive in our society and how it is influencing the contemporary international art scene.
An event not to be missed!
