Plaine Garden City
Description
This human-scale garden city was built between 1950 and 1965 by a group of architects under the direction of Robert Auzelle, an urbanist architect. The city was developed according to a plan that was very innovative at the time. The buildings are situated either side of a green belt. Technical sun and wind studies were conducted, leading to the placement and orientation of the buildings. The choice of material, bricks from "La Queue de Pie" brickworks in Petit-Clamart, strengthens the identity of the buildings.
La Cité de la Plaine spans 32 hectares, comprising 12 hectares of green spaces and 77 two- to four-storey buildings, detached and semi-detached houses, making a total of 1993 dwellings for 6000 people. Schools, play areas, a library, a shopping centre, artists’ studios and sports facilities gradually completed the humanist project behind this architecture.
Together with the Cimetière Intercommunal, La Cité de la Plaine is Robert Auzelle's masterpiece and summarises the evolution of his research and teaching in the field of the urban environment.
