Château de Champs-sur-Marne
Description
First, soak up the beauty of the gardens. In the heart of an 85-hectare park, the boxwood hedge design of this French garden, inspired by the gardens of the Château de Versailles, was created by the gardener André Le Nôtre at the height of his career, offering a truly royal promenade, full of charm and elegance.
Guests of honour
Built in the eighteenth century for the financial advisor to Louis XIV, this castle was frequented by such distinguished guests as the Marquise de Pompadour and the Princess of Conti, and by literary men from Denis Diderot to Marcel Proust. Its neoclassical rooms, with their eighteenth-century Rococo decor and Chinese influences that were the height of modernity at the time, contain over 900 magnificent pieces of furniture, made by the greatest cabinetmakers of the time. More than 80 films have been shot in this exceptional setting, including Dangerous Liaisons and Sofia Coppola’s Marie-Antoinette.
Living history
Temporary exhibitions of costumes, furniture and works of art showcase French art de vivre of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and workshops and activities are regularly held inside the château and in the grounds, making for a much more dynamic experience than simply going to a museum.
